Startup life, Afrigator and McKinsey’s Growth Pyramid

Sometimes life throws something unexpected at you, and if you’re really lucky, it’s something cool.

The other day I found out that my “Lighter side of startups” presentation made a guest appearance at the University of Stellenbosch’s Media Lab courtesy of Justin Hartman. Thanks Justin for the inclusion, glad you liked it! [aren't Creative Commons licences brilliant!]

But this is a bit off the point.

afrigatorBesides a cool slide on the Finance Cycle, Justin’s presentation demonstrates how the application of McKinsey’s Growth Pyramid at the startup he is MD of, Afrigator, has helped them to deliver better-than-anticipated results relatively early in their life-cycle.

I think it’s a good start to a case study [with limited detail, for obvious reasons] for South African startups, or any tech startup, for that matter. Definitely worth a look. [I'm just sorry I missed the actual presentation.] Here are the slides:

Good luck to the team at Afrigator. Thanks for letting us share the ride with you. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your successes as you go.

Afrigator is one of South Africa’s more celebrated and globally recognised internet startups. Business 2.0 magazine named them one of the top non-US sites to watch in 2007. In 2008 MIH Print Africa [a subsidiary of the Naspers group] acquired a majority stake in the company and it has since had its head office in Cape Town, South Africa.
