Get your idea out there

just do itStartup numbers guy, and one of my favourite writers – Mark McLeod – makes a very strong case for getting your new business idea out there as soon and as much as possible“If you love your idea, set it free”.

Mark is right. In an age where new businesses develop almost as fast as ideas do, sitting on your ideas is the fastest way to go nowhere quickly. And as he says, it creates momentum for the idea too.

And yet, with Project Neo [my baby], it’s hard to let go. Sure, I’ve spoken to a couple of people, but really putting it out there… well, that’s something else entirely.

There are just so many reasons to wait just a little bit longer:

  • being scared of what people will think
  • fearing a fast-moving giant will throw resources at the idea and beat you
  • thinking it’s not quite ready for anyone to see

… and the list goes on. I’m sure you know the excuses as well as I do. Most are unfounded, the rest are just vain introspective bulldust.

So yeah, it’s about time we put this out there. I know you’re right Mark.

So how come it’s so difficult to let go?

  • I totally agree. I've been sitting on my idea for 5 years now, and it's only when I got retrenched recently that I realized I had to move with it. FAST! It's as stressfull and unpredictable as I thought, but it's fulfilling!
