Would you open an FNB account just because of this Paypal thingy?

Rusty Lock: Security (grunge)You’ve most likely heard the rumours.

If they’re true…

… I’ll be hacked off that it actually is possible despite all the excuses we’ve been hearing for so long.

If they’re true…

… I’ll be fuming that it’s one bank driving this, not the government or the SARB or any of the other bodies that should be pushing this.

If they’re true…

… I’ll be thrilled that SA online retailers and small businesses will at last get a fair shot at a global stage.

FNB has seemingly seen a gap and taken it, and for that I have to take my hat off to them.

So if they’re true…

then yes I would.

Wouldn’t you?

  • Hey Kevin, wish I could take the credit but there's been noise about it for almost a week. FNB has also issued a very short statement [if you can call it that] saying the are in talks with Paypal, but nothing else - Daily Maverick covered it here.

Agree with you though, if its FNB only it will be a huge coup for them and definitely a reason to have an FNB account in addition to whatever others you already have.

Hi Darren, this is great news for SA, and especially online SA businesses who sell their goods or services on the global stage. I have not followed the reports closely enough to know how this would work technically, but if it means you have to open an FNB account in order to implement PayPal on your site, then as a South African online business it's a no-brainer - it would be crazy not to have an FNB account. Kudos to FNB for getting this one right. Please keep us updated on progress.
    Kind regards
    Kevin
